Another Palembang speciality is lacquer, a technique probably introduced to the area by the Chinese, in which wood and basketware items are sealed, painted, decorated with black ink designs and covered in a layer of lacquer produced from ant’s nests. Deep red and gold are the traditional colors, and each of the decorations has significance: flowers for beauty, a lion for strength, the golden phoenix for an end to problems, and butterflies to signify the pleasures of the night – good sleep, good dreams and love.
